Max Kahrer (Timisoara 1878 – Klosterneuburg 1937)

was an Austrian landscape painter who is particularly known for his atmospheric depictions of the surroundings of Klosterneuburg. After studying at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Franz Rumpler and Christian Griepenkerl, he settled in Klosterneuburg, where he founded the ‘Association of Local Artists in Klosterneuburg’ in 1906. His works are characterised by a calm colour palette and an intimate rendering of nature. Kahrer was close friends with Egon Schiele, who painted several portraits of him, including a profile picture from 1910, which is now kept at the Albertina in Vienna. Schiele also visited Kahrer's first exhibition in 1908 at the Kaiserhaus in Klosterneuburg. Works by Max Kahrer can now be found in important collections such as the Austrian Gallery Belvedere and the Vienna Museum.
