Josef Floch (Vienna 1894 – New York 1977)

was an Austrian-American painter whose work reveals a characteristic combination of Viennese Modernism and French Post-Impressionism. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, he joined the progressive Hagenbund, whose open attitude towards new artistic trends had a lasting influence on him. In the 1920s, he moved to Paris, later emigrating to the United States in 1938. His minimalist interiors, portraits and still lifes are characterised by clear compositions and muted colours. Works by Floch can be found in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Austrian Gallery Belvedere, among others.
