Martha Jungwirth (Vienna 1940 – lives in Vienna and Neumarkt an der Raab)
is one of the most prominent painters in contemporary Austrian art. Her work moves between abstraction and perception, often based on memories, landscapes or fleeting observations. Having made an early appearance as a member of the ‘Wirklichkeiten’ group, she developed her own unique visual language, characterised by rhythmic gestures, raw materials and powerful use of colour. Jungwirth prefers to work with oil and watercolour, often on paper or unconventional image carriers. She gained widespread attention through her participation at documenta 6 in Kassel (1977), retrospectives in Krems and Vienna, and her monumental work ‘Das trojanische Pferd’ (The Trojan Horse) on the Iron Curtain of the Vienna State Opera. Her works are in demand internationally and are part of important collections.
