Jakob Gasteiger (born in Salzburg in 1953)
is an Austrian artist who reduces painting to its elementary principles. Since the 1980s, he has concentrated on works in which material and rhythm determine expression. Using tools such as comb spatulas, he forms grooves and lines in monochrome picture surfaces, creating relief-like surfaces that lie between painting and object. His work is closely linked to Vienna and the Weinviertel region and has received numerous awards. Works by Gasteiger can be found in major Austrian and international museum collections including the Albertina, Belvedere, mumok and other institutions.
