Günter Brus (Ardning 1938 – 2024 Graz)
was an influential Austrian artist and co-founder of the Viennese Actionism art movement. In the 1960s he used his own body as a central means of expression in his early actions to question social norms and taboos. Later, he turned his attention increasingly to drawing, painting and literature, in which image and language merged into independent poetic forms. Brus' work has been exhibited internationally and has received numerous awards. In Graz, the Bruseum, dedicated to him, honours his life's work. He is considered a pioneer of body art and a formative figure in Austrian and international art history.
His works are represented in important collections, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and major Austrian institutions such as the mumok and the Neue Galerie im Joanneum Graz.
